TITLE OF THE COURSE: ELL CREATIVE WRITING

Course Description: This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to practice the art of creative writing. Emphasis is placed on writing fiction, poetry and essays. Upon completion, students should be able to craft and critique their own writing and critique the writing of others.
 
Level: Introductory
 
Prerequisite: Students are expected to have an upper-intermediate or advanced level of English to follow the course, to read and understand the written material, and to carry out the written projects and make criticisms.

Outline of Instruction :
 
1-      Writing and criquing short stories (Weeks 1-4)
2-     Writing and critiquing poetry  (Weeks 5-7)
3-     Writing and critiquing essays (Weeks 8-10)
4-     Final revisions to poetry, short story, essay, criticism (Weeks 12-13)
 
Objectives:
 
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
 
1-      Use writing exercices and other prewriting activity to generate ideas
2-     Critically read poery, short fiction, and sketches
3-     Distinguish works of literary merit from other types of writing
4-     Write and critique poetry, short stories, essays and critiques
5-     Critique the writing of others in a substantive manner
6-     Avoid major errors ain grammar and spelling
 
General Objectives:
 
The student will be able to:
 
A-    To expand understanding of creative processes, especially invention
B-    To understand and use the writing process (Prewriting, writing, revising, polishing, editing)
C-    To improve skills in writing forms such as poetry, short fiction, and essay
D-    To learn and work in groups
E-     To understand the role of audience perception when writing

1.      Regular journals
2.      Invention activities
3.      Group activities
 
B-    Poetry
 
1.      Study of existing poems
2.      Experimenting with various poetic forms
3.      Polishing poem revision
 
C-    Short Fiction
 
1.      Elemets of fiction
2.      Reading existing short fiction
3.      Writing fiction
4.      Revising and polishing fiction
 
 
   Requirements :
 
1-      Reading assignements
2-      In-class exercices and writing assignemenys
3-      Group critiques and discussions
4-      Three major writings taken through a series of revisions: poetry, short story, criticism and essay
